Step-by-step explanation:

x + 2y = - 9 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  3x + 4y =  - 17

MULTIPLYING FIRST EQN. WITH 3 AND THEN SUBTRACTING IT WITH SECOND EQN.,

4y - 6y =  - 17 + 9

 - 2y =  - 8

y = 4

APPLYING IT IN THE EQN. ,

x + 8 =  - 9

x =  - 17

X=-17. AND Y=4
