ethan69: - times -3 is +3, so +3 times -6 would be -18, not +18. Hence, solution will be x=6,y=0.

Given : x+3y=6\ and\ 2x-3y=12

To find : x= ? and y = ?

Solution :

Using the cross multiplication we get :

x=\dfrac{b_1c_2-b_2c_1}{a_1b_2-a_2b_1}\\\\x=\dfrac{3\times -12-(-3)\times -6}{1\times -3-2\times 3}\\\\x=\dfrac{-36-18}{-3-6}\\\\x=\dfrac{54}{-9}\\\\x=-6

Similarly,

y=\dfrac{c_1a_2-a_1c_2}{a_1b_2-a_2b_1}\\\\y=\dfrac{-6\times 2-1\times -12}{1\times -3-2\times 3}\\\\y=\dfrac{-12+12}{-3-6}\\\\y=0

Hence, the value of x = -6 and y = 0.
