If y = x + 1/x , then x4 + x3 - 4x2 + x + 1 = 0 becomes
x2 ( y2 + y - 2 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 6 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 3 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 4 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 2 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 6 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 3 ) = 0
x2 ( y2 + y - 4 ) = 0
