Answer:

(iii) 2x - y = 12

Step-by-step explanation

(i) Substitute x = 5, y = -2 in 2x + y = 9

LHS                  RHS

2(5) + (-2)         = 9

10 -2

= 8

8 ≠ 9

∴ LHS ≠ RHS

∴ x = 5, y = -2 is not a solution of the linear equation 2x + y = 9

(ii) x + 3y = 1

Substitute x = 5, y = -2 in x + 3y = 1

LHS              RHS

x + 3y           = 1

5 +3 (-2)

5 + (-6)

5 - 6

= -1

-1  ≠ 1

∴ LHS ≠ RHS

∴ ∴ x = 5, y = -2 is not a solution of the linear equation x + 3y = 1 .

(iii) Substitute x = 5, y = -2 in the linear equation 2x - y = 12

LHS            RHS

2x - y           = 12

2(5) - (-2)

10 + 2

= 12

12 = 12

∴ LHS = RHS

∴ x = 5, y = -2 is a solution of the linear equation 2x - y = 12

∴ Option (iii) is the correct answer.
