Subracting Eq(1) from Eq(2). We get ,

Eq(2) - Eq(1)

=> (x + y) - (x - 6y) = -3 - (-12)

=> (x + y - x + 6y) = -3 + 12

=> 7y = 9

=> y = 9/7

Putting the value of y in Eq(2). We get ,

x + y = -3

=> x + 9/7 = -3

=> x = -3 - 9/7

=> x = -21 - 9/7

=> x = -30/7
