Section 56 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 says that a contract to do an act, which after the contract is made, becomes impossible, or by reason of some event which the promisor could not prevent, becomes void when the act becomes impossible or unlawful.
In the given case, X and Y agree to marry on a particular date but after the agreement and prior to marriage X turns lunatic which makes the agreement impossible to be performed and hence, the contract becomes void in nature under section 56 of the act.
