in order to find the value of x ( one item) bought use the formula :

10x = 28

x = 2.8

now in order to find the gain :  

we find the cost of 12 items( a dozen ) which is 12 * 2.8 = 33.6

since it is sold for 48

we find the difference  = 48-33.6 = 14.4

now to get the gain we use the formula -----

   difference / origional amount  * 100

which is :

14.4 /33.6 * 100 = 42.8571

to 2dp = 42.86%
