For x

Atomic number = 17

Electronic configuration= 2, 8 ,7

Valency = -1

It has -1 valency which means it to be stable like nearest noble gas neon needs one electron.

For y

Atomic number =20

Electronic configuration = 2,8,8,2

Valency = +2

It has valency +2 which means it need to lose its 2 electrons to be stable like nearest noble gas.

When x and y reacts, since the valency of y is +2 , so two atoms of x will be needed to complete the formation the compound formed will have formula

 yx_2.

Position

For x,

x have valency -1 which means it lies in group 17 and is a halogen , since it has two shells filled with electron it lies in peroid 2.

For y,

y have valency +2 which means it lies in group 2 and is a alkali earth metal.Since it has four shells filled with electrons it lies in period 4.

x is chlorine

y is calcium

Both forms calcium chloride .

 CaCl_2.
