first put the values of x and y on the LHS of the equation. The equation becomes (a cos theta)^2 + ( a sin theta)^2 , then a^2 costheta^2 + a^2 sintheta^2 , then take a^2 common. now cos^2 theta + sin^2 theta = 1. your answer comes a^2.
