16 plus 4 is equal to 20 x
36 plus 4 is equal to 40 y

Here is solution.
Given, age of X = 36
Age of Y = 16
Let the year after which X's age is twice than y's age be a.

Then after a year age of X = 36+a.
And age of Y = 16+ a

As per given condition
36+a = 2 (16+a)
36 + a = 32 +2a
36-32 = 2a - a
4 = a

Therefore answer = 4 years.
