Abstract
In addition to the plasma membrane surrounding the cell, eukaryotic cells contain a variety of membrane-limited subcellular organelles that can be placed in one of two categories: those that are connected by pathways of vesicle-mediated membrane traffic and those that are not. Subcellular organelles that are connected by pathways of membrane traffic include (1) the ER, (2) the nucleus, (3) the Golgi apparatus, (4) various endosomes, and (5) lysosomes. The ER has the largest surface area of any subcellular organelle and is the site where most proteins and lipids are first inserted into a membrane. New lipids and proteins leave the ER for other sites by vesicle-mediated transport.
