Dear student,

It is given that;

               X = metal

          Y, Z = non-metals

We need to find the type of compounds the above two categories can form.

We know that compounds formed between metals and non-metals are ionic and the ones which are formed between two non-metals is a covalent compound. Using this concept, we have;

Case 1: What will be the type of compound formed by X and Y.

Answer: Ionic Compound.

Reason: They are formed by the gain/loss of electrons.

Case 2: What will be the compound formed by Y and Z.

Answer: Covalent Compound.

Reason: They are formed by the sharing of electrons.
