Rahul observed X is attracted while Y is not. X is a mixture of iron and sulphur, and in a mixture the inherent properties of components are not lost. But when this mixture is heated then Iron and Sulphur react to form Iron Sulphide, which is a different compound.

A compound will not exhibit properties of the constituent elements. Iron is magnetic. But, Sulphur and Iron Sulphide are non-magnetic.

Hence only the iron from X is attracted.
