Answer:

As the element X is placed in group 14 then the valency of the element is 4.

Now we know that the valency of chlorine is 1 as it's the atomic number is 17.

So as the element X has the valency 4 it can neither gain nor lose electrons to attain octet.

X is probably C.

So it makes a covalent bonding with four atoms of chlorine to form a compound CCl4

Explanation:

In Carbon tetrachloride CCl4

Carbon electronegativity is 2.5 and that of chlorine is 3. Thus all the four chlorine atoms try to attract the shared pair of electrons towards themselves. This is expected to leave a partial positive charge on carbon and negative charges on the chlorine.

The molecular geometry of CCl 4

is tetrahedral with symmetric charge distribution around the central atom.

Therefore,CCl 4 is nonpolar.

.Carbon Tetrachloride is a clear, colorless, volatile and very stable chlorinated hydrocarbon. ...

.Carbon tetrachloride is a manufactured chemical that does not occur naturally. ...

.Carbon tetrachloride appears as a clear colorless liquid with a characteristic odor.
