X is carbon dioxide and Y is phosphorus.

The two diferences can be listed as below

1)Atmospheric inputs of phosphorus through rainfall are much smaller than carbon inputs.

2)Gaseous exchanges of phosphorus between organism and environment are negligible whereas that of carbon is significant.
