Answer:

40 days

Step-by-step explanation:

Let

Efficiency of Y = a

Efficiency of X = 4a

Time taken by both to complete a work = 16 days

1/4a + 1/a = 1/16

5/4a = 1/16

a = 20

Hence X will do the work in 20 days

And Y will do the work in 80 days

Thus Y will do half of work in 40 days

NOTE: Efficiency and time taken are inversely proportional

Given :- X is four times efficient as Y in respect of doing particular work. Working together they complete in 16 days.In how many day Y alone working can do half work .

Solution :-

Let us assume that, Efficiency of Y is x unit / day.

Than,

→ Efficiency of X = 4 times of Y = 4x unit / day.

So,

→ In one day both completes = (x + 4x) = 5x units.

Than,

→ in 16 days both completes = 5x * 16 = 80x units = Total work.

Therefore,

Time taken by Y alone to complete half work = (Total work / 2) / (Efficiency of Y) = (80x/2) / (x) = (40x/x) = 40 days. (Ans.)

Hence, Y alone completes half work in 40 days.
