The value of x and y is 600 and 400 ml respectively.

Given:

M1 = 0.5 M

V1 = x ml

M2 = 0.25 M

V2 = y ml

M = 0.4 M

V = 1 L or 1000 ml

To Find:

The value of x and y.

Solution:

We know the formula,

  M1V1 + M2V2 = MV

  0.5*x + 0.25*y = 0.4*1000

On solving we get,

   2x + y = 1600 ------------- (1)

we know, x+y = 1000 ml  -----------(2)

                 y = 1000 - x  substitute in (1)

We get, 2x + 1000 - x = 1600

              x = 600 ml  substitute in (2)

We get, y = 1000 - 600

                = 400 ml

Hence, The value of x and y is 600 and 400 ml respectively.
