Out of X, Y, Z which are coloured compounds

Explanation:

  • For a compound to be coloured, their has to be presence of unpaired electrons. So, compounds having unpaired electrons are having colour.
  • Mostly d and f- block elements show colour. They are also known as transition and inner transition elements respectively.
  • X has electronic configuration [Ne] 3s². s-orbital has 2 electrons that is it is fully filled. Therefore, X has no unpaired electrons and it is not coloured.
  • Y has electronic configuration [Ar]4s¹. Valence shell orbital that is s - orbital has 1 electron. Therefore, it is show colour when burn in flame and it is highly reactive metal.
  • Z has electronic configuration [Ar]3d³4s². Valence shell orbital i.e. d-orbital has 3 electrons which are unpaired. Therefore, Z is a transition metal and hence show colour.

Out of X, Y, Z: Z show colour and Y show colour on heating.
