2x + 4y =  - 2

subtract equation second from first,

0 + 7y =  - 14

y = \frac{ - 14}{7}

y =  - 2

put y = -2 in equation first

x + ( - 2)2 =  - 1

x - 4 =  - 1

x =  - 1 + 5

x =4

x = p \: and \: y = q

therefore, p = -2

q = 4
