❥︎ Explain the break down of glucose by various pathways :

❥︎ \large\underline\mathrm\blue{Answer \: :}

  • When there is a present of oxygen, breakdown of glucose takes place in mitochondria.

  • When there is a absent of oxygen, breakdown of pyruvate will be in only cytoplasm.

  • In insufficient presence of oxygen, the cells undergoes anaerobic respiration.

  • Glucose breaks down into three carbon molecules called pyruvate.

First step of break down of glucose (6 carbon molecules) take place in the cytoplasm of cell of all organisms. This process yields a 3 carbon molecule compound called pyruvate.

Further break down of Pyruvate take place in different ways in different organisms.

  1. Anaerobic respiration: the anaerobic respiration in plants (like yeast) produces ethanol and Co² as end products.
  2. Aerobic respiration: In aerobic respiration break down of Pyruvate take place in presence of oxygen to give rise to 3 carbon molecule of Co² and water. The release of energy in aerobic respiration is much more than in anaerobic respiration.
  3. lack of oxygen: Sometimes when there is lack of oxygen, especially during physical exercise in our muscles, Pyruvate is converted into lactic acid (3 carbon molecule compound). Formation of lactic acid in muscles cause tramp.
