x²+4x+5

using b²-4ac

=16-4(1)(5)

=16-20

=-4

since b²-4ac < 0 therefore the roots are non real and not equal

Since the determinant is negative

(ie, b²-4ac<0) , the equation will have non real and imaginary roots
