x + x - 5 + x - 7 = 49

By adding the like terms,

➾ 3x - 12 = 49

Change the position of the like terms and bring then together. When changing the position of the numbers, - changes to + and + changes to - ; × changes to ÷ and ÷ changes to ×

➾ 3x = 49 + 12

Add

➾ 3x = 61

Find x

➾ x = 20.\overline{3}

∴ The value of x is 20.\overline{3}
