(ii) 2y = x - 4

⇒ x - 2y = 4

x + y = 1 ........... multiply with 2

x - 2y = 4 ........... multiply with 1

⇒       2x + 2y = 2

          x - 2y = 4

(add)   3x = 6

              ∴ x = 2

x + y = 1

2 + y = 1

y = -1

∴ x = 2, y = -1
