xy=4.......(ii)

From (i),  x=3+y.....(iii)

Substitute (iii) in (ii)

so, (3+y)(y)=4

       y^2+3y-4=0

      Taking sum and product,

       Sum=3 , product= -4... its comes 4 and -1

    y^2+4y-1y-4=0

   y(y+4)-1(y+4)=0

   y+4=0    ,   y-1=0

    y= -4 and y= 1..

From (iii),

              if y= 1. then x=3+1 = 4

              x^2+y^2= (4)^2+(1)^2 = 16+1 = 17

              if y= -4 then x=3-4 = -1

              x^2+y^2= (-1)^2+(-4)^2 = 1+16 = 17..
