Given -

x - y = -40

-7x + 3y = 180

To Find -

Value of x and y

By Elimination method :-

Now,

[x - y = -40] × 3

[-7x + 3y = 180] × 1

» 3x - 3y = -120

-7x + 3y = 180

______________

-4x = 60 (By Adding)

» x = 60/-4

  • » x = -15

Substituting the value of x = -15 on 3x - 3y = -120

Now,

» 3(-15) - 3y = -120

» -45 - 3y = -120

» -3y = -120 + 45

» -3y = -75

» y = -75/-3

  • » y = 25

Hence,

The value of x is -15 and y is 25

Verification -

  • x - y = -40

» -15 - 25 = -40

» -40 = -40

LHS = RHS

And

  • -7x + 3y = 180

» -7(-15) + 3(25) = 180

» 105 + 75 = 180

» 180 = 180

LHS = RHS

Hence,

Answer:

x=-15

y=25

Step-by-step explanation:

x-y=-40[equation 1]

-7x+3y=180[equation 2]

equation 1 *3

=3x-3y=-120

-4x=60

x=-15

3(-15)-3y=-120

-45-3y=-120

120-45=3y

3y=75

y=25
