it is better to solve this question by elimination method,

x + y = 5 ...........i

and ,

x - y = 1 .............ii

adding both equation

x + y + x - y = 5 + 1

=> 2x = 6

=> x = 6/2 = 3

putting x = 3 in equation i

then,

x + y = 5

=> 3 + y = 5

=> y = 5 - 3 = 2

so,

x = 3 and y = 2 is the solution.
