x + y = 5

=> let x be = 4

and y = 1

=> 4 + 1 = 5

5 = 5

L.H.S = R.H.S

Hence proved

and

4 - 1 = 3

3 = 3

L.H.S = R.H.S

x+y=5 -(i)

x-y=3 -(ii)

From (i),

x=5-y

Substitute this value of x in (ii)

(5-y)-y=3

5-y-y=3

5-2y=3

-2y=3-5

-2y=-2

2y=2

y=  \frac {2}{2}

 \boxed {y=1}

Use value of y in (i)

x+1=5

x=5-1

 \boxed {x=4}

Therefore, value of x=4 and y=1

 \boxed {Hope \: it \: helps}
