Given equation is x + y = 5 ---- (1)

Given xy = 3 --- (2)

On squaring equation (1) on both sides, we get

= > (x + y)^2 = (5)^2

= > x^2 + y^2 + 2xy = 25

= > x^2 + y^2 + 2(3) = 25

= > x^2 + y^2 + 6 = 25

= > x^2 + y^2 = 25 - 6

= > x^2 + y^2 = 19.

Therefore:

= > (x - y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2xy

= 19 - 2(3)

= 13.

 = > x - y = \sqrt{13}

Hope this helps!
