x + y = 56 ------------------(1)

x:y = 5:3

x/y = 5/3

3 x = 5 y

so, x = (5/3)y---------------(2)

sub (2) in (1)

x + y = 56

(5/3)y + y = 56

5 y + 3 y = 168

  8 y  = 168

  y  =  168 / 8  = 21

x = (5/3) x 21

  =  35

the value of x - y = 35 - 21

                          = 14

Given

x + y = 56

x : y = 5 : 3

Find

Value of x - y

Solution

x + y = 56 ............(1)

x / y = 5/3

3x = 5y ...............(2)

Multiply First equation by 5

5x + 5y = 56*5

5x + 5y = 280

And 5y = 3x

5x + 3x = 280

8x = 280

x = 35

So from equation 2

5*y = 3*35

y = 3*7

y = 21

Hence ( x - y ) = 35 - 21 = 14
