x + y = 8 \:  \:  \:  \: (i)

x - y = 4 \:  \:  \:  \: (ii)

so

x + y = 8

x = 8 - y \:  \:  \:  \: (iii)

Putting the value of x in equation (ii)

(8 - y) - y = 4

8 - 2y = 4

 - 2y = 4 - 8

 - 2y =  - 4

y = 2

Put the value of y=2 in equation (iii)

x = 8 - 2

x = 6

So y=2 and x=6

i.e. \: xy = 2 \times 6 = 12
