X, Y and Z are friends. X is eldest followed
by Y and Z. X is two years elder to Y and
5 yr elder to Z. The sum of present age of X
and Z is three times the age of Y, 5 yr ago.

let a years be the present age of X

then present age of Y = a-2

and present age of Z = a-5

from question,

a + (a-5) = 3(a-2-5)

=> a + a - 5 = 3 (a-7)

=> 2a - 5 = 3a - 21

=> 3a - 2a = 21-5

=> a = 16

then current/present age of Y = a-2

= 16-2

= 14 years
