Step 1. Let's get rid of the brackets (largely because they add little to the expression!).

x + y + x - y

Step 2. Lets bring all like terms together (seems a common-sense thing to do after all!).

x + x + y - y •••• Expression 1.

Step 3. Simplify Expression 1

2x•••• Exression 2.

Step 4. Is thee a subtlety I'm missing?

Firstly we cannot get a value for either x or y, because this expression as written is not equal to anything.

Therefore we cannot “get an answer" in the conventional mathematical sense.
