This is one of the many theorems in mathematics. Some taught at the primary level are given below.

(x+y)(x-y) = x²-y²

(a+b)² = a²+2ab+b²

(a-b)² = a²-2ab+b²

For this particular question the proof is:

(x+y)(x-y) = x(x-y) + y(x-y)

=x²-xy + xy-y²

= x²-y²
