SQUARING ON BOTH SIDES

 {(x  + \frac{1}{x}) }^{2}  =  {a}^{2}  \\  {x}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }   + 2 =  {a}^{2}  \\  {x}^{2}  +   \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  =  {a}^{2}  - 2

NOW SUBSTITUTING THE VALUES WE GET...

( {a}^{2}  - 2) - 4(a) - 6 = 0 \\  {a}^{2}  - 4a - 8 = 0 \\
