Given polynomial; p(x) = x² + 3x + 1

To be represented in the form of (x+p)²+q

Thus ;

  • x² + 3x + 1
  • x² + 3x + 1 ± x
  • x² + 2x + 1 + x
  • (x)² + 2(x × 1) + (1)² + x. { using (a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b² }
  • (x+1)² + x

Thus the polynomial p(x) is written in the form of (x+p)² + q where;

  • p = 1
  • q= x
