Given,

x^2 - 4x + 8 = 0

discriminant = b^{2}  - 4ac \\ here \: a = 1 \: \\ b =  - 4 \\ and \: c = 8 \\  \\ so \: putting \: back \: the \: value \\ b ^{2}  - 4ac \\  = ( - 4) ^{2}  - 4(1)(8) \\  = 16 - 32 \\  =  - 16
