x² + 4x - 8 can be written in the form (x + p) +9.
Find the value of p and q.

Use the technique 'complete the square.

Take the co-efficient of x in this case its 4 then you half it (2) square it (4) plus it and minus it.

The steps are.

(x^2 + 4x +4) -4 -8

Which makes a perfect square

(x+2)^2 - 12

therefore

p = 2 AND q = -12
