Heya friend,

L.H.S.

x^{2}  + 5x - (a^{2} + a - 6 )

There can we number of ways to solve this like :-

  • Solving the quadratic equation of variable 'a' first which is given in the equation.
  • Or, simply putting the values in the discriminant method.

So,

We know,

d = b^{2} - 4ac

  = 5^{2} - [-4(1)(a^{2} +a-6)]

  = 25 + 4a^{2}  + 4a  -24

  = 4a^{2}+4a+1

  = (2a+1)^{2}

and x = ( - b ± \sqrt{d}  ) / 2a

         = ( - 5 ±  \sqrt{(2a+1)^{2} } ) / 2 (1)

         = ( - 5 ± 2a + 1 ) / 2

So,

x is either of the two values :-

x = \frac{-5 + (2a + 1)}{2}                            OR                             x = \frac{- 5 - (2a + 1)}{2}

x= \frac{-5 + 2a + 1}{2}                               OR                             x = \frac{-5-2a-1}{2}

x=\frac{2a-4}{2}                                      OR                             x = \frac{-2a-6}{2}

x = \frac{2(a-2)}{2}                                  OR                             x = \frac{-2(a+3)}{2}

So,

x = ( a-2 ) ,  (-a-3)

Thanks!
