Solution:

Given,

→ x² + (9 - x)² = 41

Using identity - (a - b)² = a² - 2ab + b², expand..

→ x² + x² - 18x + 81 - 41 = 0

→ 2x² - 18x + 40 = 0

→ 2(x² - 9x + 20) = 0

→ x² - 9x + 20 = 0

→ x² - 4x - 5x + 20 = 0

Taking x and -5 as common, we get,

→ x(x - 4) - 5(x - 4) = 0

→ (x - 4)(x - 5) = 0

So,

→ (x - 5) = 0 or (x - 4) = 0

→ x = 4, 5

Answer:

  • x = 4, 5
