discriminant of a quadratic equation = b^2 - 4ac

given quadratic equation = x^2 + x + 2 =0

here a = 1 , b = 1 , c = 2

∴ discriminant in given quadratic equation

= (1)^2 - 4(1)(2) = 1 - 8 = -7
