Answer:

The first term is, x2 its coefficient is 1 .

The middle term is, -x its coefficient is -1 .

The last term, "the constant", is -5

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant 1 • -5 = -5

Step-2 : Find two factors of -5 whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is -1 .

-5 + 1 = -4

-1 + 5 = 4

Observation : No two such factors can be found !!

Conclusion : Trinomial can not be factored

YOUR QUESTION HAS TWO ANSWERS . LETS SOLVE THEM

x ^{2}  - x - 5 = 0

x =  \frac{ - ( - 1) +  \sqrt{( - 1) ^{2} - 4 \times 1 \times ( - 5) } }{2 \times 1}

x =  \frac{1 +  \sqrt{1 + 20} }{2}

x =  \frac{1 +  \sqrt{21} }{2}

x =   \frac{1 +  \sqrt{21} }{2}

AND

x =  \frac{1 -  \sqrt{21} }{2}

SO YOUR ANSWERS ARE =)

x =  \frac{1 -  \sqrt{21} }{2}

x =  \frac{1 +  \sqrt{21} }{2}
