Let the total amount of work was W.
Clearly, X's speed of doing work is : W/40W/40
After working for 5 days, the amount of work he did was : 5∗W/40=W/85∗W/40=W/8
Work remaining = W−W/8=7W/8W−W/8=7W/8
This remaining work was done in 21 days by P,
thus P's speed of doing work is : (7W/8)∗1/21=W/24(7W/8)∗1/21=W/24
If they work together, total speed is : W/40+W/24=W/15W/40+W/24=W/15
Thus, if they work together, the work will be done in 15 days.
