Xavier is driving home. He starts 250 miles from home and his car can travel 28 miles per gallon of gasoline he uses. Xavier stops at a rest stop that is 100 miles from home. Let g be the amount of gas he has used at that point. Set up and solve an equation for how much gas xavier used to get to the rest stop. Round to the nearest tenth.

Given : Xavier is driving home.

He starts 250 miles from home and his car can travel 28 miles per gallon of gasoline he uses.

Xavier stops at a rest stop that is 100 miles from home.

To Find : Set up and solve an equation for how much gas xavier used to get to the rest stop.

Solution :

He starts 250 miles from home

stops at a rest stop that is 100 miles from home.

Distance covered = 250 - 100  = 150  miles

Distance covered in 1 gallon = 28 miles

Let g be the amount of gas he has used at that point.

Distance covered in g gallon = 28g miles

Equate Distance

=> 28g = 150

=> g = 150/28

=> g = 75/14

=> g = 5.357

=> g = 5.36

xavier used gas to get to the rest stop = 5.36  gallons
