A Xerophyte is a plant which can with stand extremes of dry temperature. Example: Cacti.

  1. In Cacti the leaves are small, to reduce water loss due to transpiration.
  2. 2. They have a thick wax like outer covering called cuticle, which helps retain water and prevent transpiration.

Cycas

  1. Cycas belonging to the genus cycas, is a palm like tree.
  2. The stem produces a starch like substance called sago, so it is also called sago palms.
  3. They are tropical plants capable of withstanding extreme temperatures of heat and cold. It can withstand up to -15° F.
  4. Under such temperature, the leaves turn brown, burnt-like and frond like. It is a protection to the plant from the cold.
  5. Some species of cycas can withstand up to 110 °F

Water intake adaptations include deep or widespread roots, and high salt content to increase osmosis. Xerophytes have thick cuticles, lost or finely divided leaves, reduced stomata, and CAM photosynthesis. Water storage adaptations include succulence and protective coverings of color, wax, hair, and/or spines.
