Xylem transports water and soluble mineral nutrients from roots to various parts of the plant. It is responsible for replacing water lost through transpiration and photosynthesis. Phloem translocates sugars made by photosynthetic areas of plants to storage organs like roots, tubers or bulbs.✌

→ Xylem and phloem are examples of complex tissues. Both these tissues are conducting tissues and constitute a vascular bundle.
→ Xylem and phloem differ in the following ways.
- It conducts water and minerals from roots to all parts of the plant.
- The elements which help in conduction are tracheids and vessels.
- Both the non-living and highly thick walled.
- The material in xylem can move only in one direction.
- Except for xylem parenchyma, all other cells are non-living.
- It conducts organic food synthesized in the leaf and hormones synthesised at that shoot and root tips to other parts of the plant.
- Seive tube cells are responsible for the movement of material through phloem.
- They are living cells.
- The materials in phloem can move in both the directions.
- Except for phloem fibres, all other cells are living.
