Xylem depends on the process of diffusion for transport of water and minerals. When the roots absorb water from the soil both soil and root have different ion concentration in the soil. This difference allows the water to flow upwards steadily.
Despite that water is evaporated through leaves during day. Hence water is diffused into the area where there is loss of water. Thus a suction pull is created.
