xylem transport sap upwards only whereas phloem transport food in both direction?why do you think there is a difference?

in phloem tube energy is required to send the food.

Xylem take the minerals from the roots which take them from soil to leaves for photosynthesis and phloem takes prepared food from leaves to all parts of the plant. That is why there is a difference.
