according to structure of xylem, Tracheids and vessel elements are distinguished by their shape; vessel elements are shorter, and are connected together into long tubes that are called vessels.so, the vessels transports the water in one way that is upwards only. because the water requirements are on upper parts only.
according to structure and function of phloem, Phloem is responsible for transporting food produced from photosynthesis from leaves to non-photosynthesizing parts of a plant such as roots and stems. so it transports food prepared from photosynthesis upwards and downwards both. because the requirement of food is everywhere.
