By using identity (a-b)^2= a^2-2ab+b^2

y^2-2*3y + 3^2 = y^2-9

y^2-6y+9 = y^2-9

y^2-y^2-6y = -9-9

-6y = -18

Hence, y = -18/-6

Hence y = 3
