IMPORTANCE OF PHILLIPPINE THEATRE
Tanghalang Pilipino (Philippine Theater) is the leading exponent of Philippine theater and the resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines since its organization in 1987. It has successfully presented hundreds of productions over more than 30 theater seasons, earning numerous awards and citations while generating one of the best attendance records among the CCP's resident companies. The Phillippine theater is important and plays an important role in promoting Filipino culture and heritage. It showcases the beauty and talent Filipinos have. Furthermore, it seeks to entertain people and as well as imparts knowledge through telling a story in a creative way.
Tanghalang Pilipino wishes to develop and train actors, playwrights, and designers with special emphasis on the production of original Filipino plays. By staging plays from the repertoire of the Philippine past and plays in translation from other countries, TP hopes to bring to the experience of both artists and audience the best of Philippine and global theatre tradition. It looks forward to educating and awakening the cultural consciousness of the Filipino audiences through its regular performances and other related activities like workshops, symposia, and interactions. Each performer tries to create a piece of art, not only for God but also for the whole community. The problem may indeed be that after four hundred years of domination the cultural conceptions and values of their former colonizers have become inextricably enmeshed in the national psyche. With mastery of the language came more playwrights, like Jorge Bocobo, Carlos P. Romulo, and Vidal Tan — all of them, coincidentally, later presidents of the University of the Philippines. Virginia Moreno’s Straw Patriot (1956) was first staged in Tagalog translation, as, Philippine Cultural Education Program (PCEP), Philippine Registry of Cultural Property (PRECUP), Gawad Alab ng Haraya, and Dangal ng Haraya.
An actor’s primary duty is to effectively communicate the character that they are playing to an audience, using their voice, body, actions, and reactions. Through their art, actors tell stories, engender emotional reactions in their audience and make people think. Hours/Travel Usually work evenings and weekends. Often work long hours. Once a show opens, stage actors usually work about 30 hours a week. Travel when shows are “on the road.”
